The Rule of Thirds

 

 Rather than putting an interesting element in the middle of the picture, it is often more effective to put it off-center.  Imagine your scene divided into thirds, and place interesting elements where the lines intersect, as in the photo to the left.  Similarly, horizons often look better 1/3 of the way to the top or bottom of a picture, rather than right in the middle.
