What Lenses Do

In additon to your choice of shutter speed, aperture, and film speed, there is one other factor that affects how your photo will look-- the lens you use. Lenses are available in a variety of focal lengths and are measured in millimeters (mm). The smaller the focal length, the wider the angle of view. A 50mm lens gives approximately the same angle of view as the human eye and is often referred to as a normal lens. Wide-angle lenses have focal lengths of less than 50mm, while telephoto lenses have focal lengths greater than 50mm. Wide-angle lenses are useful for landscapes or group shots, while telephoto lenses are good for isolating individual elements of a scene or for bringing distant subjects closer.

Each of the photos above was taken from the same position, about 85 yards from the Land Cruiser. In addition to the overall view, notice how the positions of the two trees framing the truck change as the focal length increases.
